Deputy Leader of the Labour Party!
Posted by harriet in Uncategorized | June 30th, 2007
Thank you so much to all of you who supported me to become Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. It is a great honour and a priviledge. On Thursday, Prime Minister Gordon Brown appointed me to be Leader of the House of Commons. I will be leading on the changes to make Parliament stronger. My Deputy Leader of the House will be Helen Goodman MP. I am also Minister for Women in the Cabinet. And will be working on that important agenda with Barbara Follet MP who will be Minister for Women and Equalities. And I am chair of the Labour Party. Thursday was our first Cabinet meeting under Gordon Brown. On Friday I visited a children’s centre in Brent with Gordon to mark the new Department for Children and Families headed by Ed Balls MP. Today, my first public engagement since my appointments, will be to speak in Trafalgar Square in the Gay Pride rally. And despite my election campaign for Deputy being over - I will continue to blog!

Well done Harriet, you will be an asset to the party and in taking the fight to David Cameron’s hollow Tory Party.
As a campaigner for animal welfare, I was enormously encouraged by your statements during the DL election, on the issues I am involved in.
As you know, Cameron has promised his friends in the Countryside Alliance that he will repeal the ban on hunting with dogs should he achive power.
He is also encouraging law breaking hunts by outrageous statements such as ‘the law is not working’ and so on.
Please do what you can in government to expose Cameron’s agenda of bringing cruelty back to the countryside.

as minister for women…I implore you to arrest the development of the ‘cro,’ ‘asbo,’ agenda for street prostitutes, even though your semantic has moved…not a lot, the practicalities get worse and your figures get better!
as in Ipswich, with the killings, where women were forced into the periphery by the anti social beh agenda,
there will be more murder, abuse and nastiness under this, with the police and ‘their agents!!,’ harrassing and imprisoning, Enabling more punters ‘freed,’ to do as they will.
housing, jobs and a connected education will make a difference, an acceptance of the realities too…,
4pm comittee room 9 on the 11 july ’safety first coalition,’ a reasonable response to the ipswich murders,

Will you use your new position in the party to argue against increasing sectarian education (aka Faith Schools)?
This is a policy which may have little immediate effect but in the end may prove disasterous for community cohesion in th UK.

Hello gorgeous. I’m a Lib Dem, but I was really pleased when you won the deputy leadership, not least because of your remarks on Guantanamo Bay and extraordinary rendition. I trust you will keep up the pressure on these issues. Have you considered joining Facebook? I think your presence there would be really useful. Take care.

Alan,
Harriet has already made some useful noises about faith schools. It’s one of the reasons I love her!

Laurence,
Harriet has already made some useful noises about Iraq too. They didn’t last long. Hope Alan isn’t holding his breath.

That’s a bit unfair. Harriet has to act constructively within the government of which she is a member. She will be making the same noises, but privately around the cabinet table.

I know it’s a woman’s prerogative to change her mind and all that, but why does Harriet deny saying what she repeatedly said on the record during her campaign? Doesn’t she even respect those who voted for her?
Iraq is no trivial issue and this government’s policy is… well, I suppose it’s not to have a policy. Just keep going as we are and hope something changes for the better. Our troops deserve better, rather than being expected to soldier on, even die, in support of an immoral and utterly discredited policy.
Blair and his cronies hadn’t an ounce of moral fibre between the lot of them; I expected rather more of Harriet.

I’m afraid I won’t hear a bad word against Harriet. How can you be so beastly to such a lovely lady? Harriet is unquestionably the best thing for the Labour party. I speak as a Lib Dem incidentally.

Oh well, they say that love is blind. Particularly disappointing from a Lib Dem when Charles Kennedy led your party with such distinction over this issue.
I feel that Iraq is, in the end, a matter of morality and of conscience; of such importance that those who disagree with the government’s position should resign, not ‘act privately’.

Not sure what to make of your posts Laurence. If Harriet wants your rather sexist comments, she should have a fan page where yourself and others can post to your hearts content.
Harriet is a serious professional politician, and I am sure that she welcomes robust political debate. I doubt if your trivialising such issues, even if you have a hint of humourous irony, will strike any chord with someone who has done so much that is positive for women throughout her career.
I’m a Lib Dem too, and I find you something of an embarassment. But then again, I do agree with the views expressed here on Iraq.

Charles Kennedy was one of the most overrated (not to say inebriated) politicians of modern times. But what’s this? . . .

I’m sure she doesn’t mind really, but I shall desist for now.
I’m a Lib Dem too, and I find you something of an embarrassment.
What, more embarrassing than Sir Ming?
Now why don’t you semi-anonymous critics get yourselves a profile so that we can all see who you are?

A Minister for Woman, you champion the values od Equality, Fairness and Social Justice. Values play an important part in planning and developing policy for all citizens in our society, particularly when drawing up a Labour Party manifesto. Religious fundamentalism has values, there are values of Britishness, there are also values of Democratic Socialism. Values found within multiculturism particularly radical fundamentalism which are conflicting and antagonising with the values within a Western Democracy. The toleration of the values of minority rights have replaced the normative values and rights enjoyed by the majority, whereby these latter rights and values are subordinated. When radical fundamentalism denies female and gay equality are minority values a priority or majority normative values. Labour Policy of appeasement or turning a blind eye to attacks on British VALUES has fuelled inequality and destroyed Moral values.
What values are your priority for the next ten years?
p.s
The value of a postage stamp informs the receiver of mail how important they regard equality and values. i.e second class or a first class citizen or labour party member.
