High hopes at Conference

Very upbeat feeling at conference. Good debates on equal pay, Remploy, how we make policy and a whole range of issues. Just back from a packed event hosted by Stonewall and the new Equality and Human Rights Commission. Last night Gala dinner attended by trade unions, business and the voluntary sector. Huge admiration for Gordon’s speech. Attended receptions for Northern night, Scots night, Yorkshire night, London reception, North West reception, South East reception and West Midlands reception. Today had Pizza Express lunch with 20 members from Camberwell and Peckham. Tomorrow off to visit a school with Gordon.

Now that Iraq has moved back into the UK political consciousness, I’ll ask Harriet again: Does the presence of our forces in Iraq serve a purpose important enough to justify risking troops lives? Does this country even have a discernible policy where Iraq is concerned? And what exactly is your position?

Remploy, just the one word. What about Remploy?
The 2500 anxious and dejected disabled factory workers are currently fighting to keep their jobs. They were depending on the Party to produce something a little more significant than a reiteration of the committments made by Mr Hutton in the Parliamentary debate on Remploy on 22nd May 2007.
Every one of us is potentially disabled and may be struck down at some time by illness or accident through no fault of our own. It is at times like these we appreciate the support and development opportunities provided in the Remploy factories. They give us a reason to get out of bed in the morning, the chance to retrain and regain our confidence. Work allows us to keep our dignity.
The Remploy Board are set to abdicate their social responsibility and decimate the factory network. This will leave the lives of thousands of disabled people (and their families) who depend on its unequalled development and support experience in turmoil.
This can only be done with the approval of the Labour Party and can only be avoided with your full support. Lets not be remembered as the Party that sanctioned the destruction of an organisation which for the last 60 years has been the ‘jewel in the crown’ of supported employment

Given that you did not publish my recent submission, I must assume that in line with Government policy, you support the sacking of thousands of disabled Remploy factory workers.
The very least you could have done was to allow me to air my views, you cannot surpress every opinion contrary to your own.
Disabled Remploy workers have a valid opinion too.

Mr Hain at the Labour Conference said that he wanted choice for disabled workers to include working in a Remploy factory. He has now taken that choice away in the areas where he and you the government have agreed closures of 28 Remploy factories. What a disgrace and let down for the 2000 disabled workers who will be thrown out of the places of work they wished and love to work in.
